Debt Arrangement in Scotland: a new way to tackle multiple debt

High levels of personal debt are hitting the headlines. Some people will never repay their debts, but most will if they have a bit of breathing space.

They need time to pay, and protection from creditors while making payments. In Scotland, protection is only available while paying single debts.

The Scottish Government (then the Scottish Executive) introduced the Debt Arrangement Scheme (DAS) in November 2004. DAS is intended to be a flexible scheme, striking a fair balance between debtors and creditors. Applications must go through a specially trained money adviser, so that debtors get good quality money advice.
